Yueuijae (House of Pursuing Righteousness)Yueuijae is the hanging wooden plaque of the western house, that is, the students’ residence in Yean Hyanggyo Local School located in Seobu-ri, Dosan-myeon, Andong. This plaque, measuring 125cm by 51cm, was donated by Yean Hyanggyo Local School. The term ‘Yueui’ originated from the passage in “Jin Xin Ⅰ” of the Works of Mencius, that runs, “One’s dwelling should be benevolence; and one’s path (Yu) should be righteousness (Eui). Where else should he dwell? What other path should he pursue? When benevolence is the dwelling place of the heart, and righteousness the path of the life, the business of a great man is complete. [居惡在 仁是也 路惡在 義是也 居仁由義 大人之事備矣]” Traditionally the eastern house was used as the upper class students’ residence and the western house as the lower class students’ residence. Hyanggyo was a public Confucian school in the county seat, established to provide education for country people during the Joseon dynasty. Yean Hyanggyo was founded in 1411 (11th year of King Taejong) and was gradually developed to be a center of local education. Governor Kim Anguk (1478-1543, pen name Mojae) was one of those who contributed to this development by putting great emphasis on fostering local talents. The calligraphy of the hanging wooden plaque is written by an unknown hand in the square style. The sharpness in finishing strokes is quite noticeable in ‘義’.
