Bancheonseowon
Bancheonseowon is the hanging wooden plaque of a Confucian academy built in 1676 to hold sacrificial rites for Kim Jung-cheong (1567-1629, pen name Gujeon). The academy was located in Bongseong-ri, Bongseong-myeon, Bonghwa-gun, North Gyeongsang Province. The plaque was donated by Bonghwa Gujeon Head House of Andong Kim Clan, and it measures 134 cm in width and 43.5 cm in height. Bancheon (槃泉) was the name of the place where Gujeon had lived. The name comes from a song in the Classic of Poetry about a virtuous person living a relaxed life after retirement.
The calligraphy is written in the regular script style of an unknown author. The four characters standing straight in the “□” shape create a dignified appearance, like soldiers attending a military parade. When you see the structure, so dense that you can’t even stick a needle in it, you have no other option than to hold your breath. You can feel the determination from its shape that is tightly woven like wood furniture.
