Bibliographical of Chwiheon
Chuiheon (House of Being Charmed)‘Chuiheon’ is the hanging wooden plaque of the house built by Jo Huiyeong (1805-1854) in Palmi-ri, Gamcheon-myeon, Yecheon-gun. At age 31, Jo Huiyeong moved to Mae-am under Mt. Gobangsan in Yecheon, and he was fascinated by its scenic beauty. Thus he named his room ‘Mae-amyugeo’ meaning ‘a retreat in Mae-am’ and his house ‘Chuiheon’ meaning ‘a house of being charmed,’ which reveals his wishes to live in seclusion enjoying the beautiful scenery. It is said that the calligraphy letters were written in the square style by Jo Hyeongbok (1788-?), a senior member of the family in a high office. The small space of the hanging wooden plaque is filled with a grand spirit of thick strokes. Most noteworthy is the composition of ‘醉’ in which the strokes of ‘西’ are exceptionally well-organized while the loose structure of the upper half of ‘卒’ is balanced by the shortened vertical stroke of the bottom half. Thereby the whole character keeps a stable square shape.
