Chuisudang (House of Sleeping Drunk)‘Chuisudang’ is the hanging wooden plaque of the house built by Oh Yeon (1598-1669) in around 1640 in Cheonggi-ri, Cheonggi-myeon, Yeongyang-gun. According to the record by Cho Suldo (1729-1803, pen name Mangok), “Kim Sion (1598-1669, pen name Pyoeun) named this house ‘Chuisu,’ and the reason for that is as follows; deploring the fall of the Ming Dynasty, Oh Yeon got heavily drunk (Chui) and fell asleep (Su). While sleeping, he snored as loud as thunder. [轟飮大醉, 醉輒睡, 睡則鼾息如䨓]”The calligraphy letters are assumed to be written by Kim Sion. This calligraphy in the square style has an air of elegant stillness. Each stroke is executed in controlled brushwork which skillfully conceals motions of the brush tip in its beginning and end. Strokes appear soft and rounded, yet they retain a steely bone-like structure inside. The big size hanging wooden plaque with relatively small characters provides spacious margins, which nevertheless does not seem hollow and meaningless.
