Bobaekdang (House with Precious Uprightness)
‘Bobaekdang’ is the hanging wooden plaque at the separate house of the head family residence of Kim Gyehaeng (1431-1517, pen name Bobaekdang) in Mukgye-ri, Gilan-myeon, Andong. At age 68 in 1498, Kim Gyehaeng built a small separate house near his main residence around Seolmot Reservoir in Sosan2-ri, Pungsan-eup, Andong. He named it ‘Bobaekdang,’ inspired by his own poem, which runs, “We have no treasure in our family, but if there is any, the uprightness is precious. [吾家無寶物 寶物惟淸白]”
The calligraphy letters were written by Kim Gajin (1846-1922, pen name Dongnong) in the square style. A unique personality is stamped all over the hanging wooden plaque, which is almost filled with three large characters. The brushwork leaves no trace of the beginning and end of a stroke, without revealing the brush tip. The script seems as hard and sturdy as a stone structure.
