Chuwonjae
Chuwonjae is a hanging wooden plaque in the Gwanmakjaesa Ritual House that was built to protect the graves of the ancestors of the Daeryongsan Changwon Hwang Clan. It is located at the foot of Daryongsan Mountain in Anjeong-myeon, Yeongju-si. It was donated by Gwiam Head House of the Yeongju Changwon Hwang Clan and measures 86 cm in width and 50 cm in height. Chuwon (追遠) is taken from the chapter Xue Er (學而) of The Analects of Confucius translated by A. Charles Muller, Ceng Zi said, “When they are careful with their parents to the end and continue in reverence after their parents are gone, the virtue of the people will return to its natural depth [愼終追遠, 民德歸厚矣].”
The calligraphy is written in the regular script style of an unknown author. Like a stick the overlapping strokes are rough and strong which makes it perplexing, but it also gives it a sincere feeling. The brush starts with a rough texture and continues with good vigor forming the character chak (辶). At the end of the character chak (辶) the brush forms the character chu (追), leaving even more rough traces. Perhaps looking up to a far off place, the soft brush calmly drops the character won (遠). The chak (辶) in won (遠) seems to be written very differently, indicating it is a completely different character. When you come to the character jae (齋) the weight is properly mixed, giving it a fresh shape.
