Chungryeolsa
Chungryeolsa is a hanging wooden plaque of a shrine in Myeonggoseowon Confucian academy built by local Confucian scholars to commemorate the patriotism of the Governor of Gimjae Jeong Dam (1548-1592, posthumous name Jangryeolgong) and Oh Geuk-seong (1559-1616, pen name Munwoldang) in Dogok-ri, Ilwon-myeon, Yeongyang-gun, North Gyeongsang Province. The plaque was donated by the Lord Champan Head House (Goeeumdang) of Yaseong Jeong Clan, and it measures 132.4 cm in width and 39.6 cm in height. Chungryeol (忠烈) has the implied meaning of emulating the loyalty and zeal of Jeong Dam and Oh Geuk-seong.
The calligraphy of this plaque is in the regular script style of an unknown author. The proud and solid character jung (中) seems to have gathered all its strength in one place. As if to appear determined, the character sim (心) is placed beneath jung (中) to support it firmly. The reason that the character chung (忠) seems relaxed is due to the pride that has grown to become a dragon after doing one’s best. Following the character chung is the character yeol (烈), which resembles a blazing flame. Continuing with the energy that had been gathered in one place, the character yeol is written briskly and appears refreshing. The brush with a little less power neatly forms the character si (示), and with the strong character sa (司) added to it, the character sa (祠) is composed which calmly conveys the feeling of hospitality as if to inform you that it has the right demeanor.
