Bibliographical of Chwidamjeong

Chwidamjeong is the hanging wooden plaque in the pavilion built by Kim Ki-hwang (1841-1889, pen name Chwidam) in Gudam-ri, Pungcheon-myeon, Andong-si, North Gyeongsang Province. The plaque was donated by Mabongso family of the Chameui branch of the Suncheon Kim Clan, and it measures 128.5 cm in width and 42 cm in height. Chwidam (翠潭) means clear and blue river water, and it represents a life oriented towards seclusion. The poem written by Kim Ki-hwang that hangs on Chwidamjeong Pavillion provides an explanation of why he built the pavilion. Because he had not accomplished anything in half his life, he hoped that the pavilion would become a base for his sons and grandchildren to pursue studies.
The script of this plaque is in the clerical handwriting of Yi Ha-eung (1820-1898, pen name Seokpa). The powerful calligraphy that fills the large plaque is overwhelming to the eye. The strong and thick strokes proceed, exuding strength, and are followed by light strokes that intervene to relieve excess tension.
