Bibliographical of Bowondang
Bowondang (Hall of Gratitude for Ancestors) Bonwondang is the hanging wooden plaque of the center hall in Pyoamjae Ritual House, which was established in Dongcheon-dong, Kyeongju, to pay tribute to Yi Alpyeong, the progenitor of Yi clan from Kyeongju. The term ‘Bowon’ translates as ‘being grateful (Bo) for one’s roots and honoring one’s ancestors. (Won) [報本追遠]’ Thus the name serves to evoke the purpose of the shrine to commemorate Yi Alpyeong, who was the Headman in Alchenyangsan-chon Village and later became a high official in the early Silla period. The calligraphy is written in the square style and the scribe is unknown. Despite the repetition of heavy horizontal strokes in ‘報’, subtle variances in stroke angles help to avoid blandness. Thanks to solid vertical strokes in ‘報’ and skillful handling of directional change in ‘辶’, the script maintains its compositional balance. The vertical stroke in the middle of ‘堂’ also plays the role of a pillar supporting the whole structure.
