Docheon Seowon is the hanging wooden plaque of the namesake academy in Saroi-chon, Seongju-gun. Docheon Seowon Academy was established by local Confucian scholars to commemorate the learning and virtues of Bae Sangyrong (1574-1655, pen name Deung-am) and his brother Bae Sangho (1594-1632, pen name Goijae). The name ‘Docheon’ is presumably associated with Daecheon Stream that runs across the clan village of Seo clan from Seongsan in Donam-ri, Daega-myeon, Seongju.
The calligraphy letters are written in the square style. Though the scribe is uncertain, it is clear that this plaque was installed in early December in 1863 (1st year of King Gojong). From heavy strokes in the beginning to the fluid right-falling stroke with thick feet of ‘辶’ in the end, the brushwork skillfully controls its pace so that the letter ‘道’ has an air of scholarly composure. Whereas ‘川’ and ‘書’ shows slightly irregular formations, the rounded strokes of ‘院’ wraps up the script with smooth easiness.
