Donam Jeongsa (Donam Study Hall)Donam Jeongsa is the hanging wooden plaque of the namesake study hall in Dangu-ri, Kangdong-myeon, Kyeongju. The term ‘Donam’ refers to the south (Nam) of Mt. Doeumsan, whose towering ridge stretches out across the region. Donam Jeongsa Study Hall is currently used as a ritual chamber to hold commemorative rites for Son Yeong (1507-1569, pen name Allakdang) by his descendants of Son clan from Kyeongju. The calligraphy letters are written in the semi-cursive style and the scribe is unknown. The brushwork effectively shifts its movement from spontaneous rendering of ‘示’ to careful formation of ‘壽’, which are combined to achieve the close knit composition of ‘禱’. The script maintains its balance by alternating density in ‘禱’ and ‘精’ with looseness in ‘南’ and ‘舍’. The relaxed simplicity of ‘舍’ lends dignity to the whole script.
