Damsang Pangak is the hanging wooden plaque in the possession of Anhyeop Old House in Sangjul-dong, Yeongju, preserved by Head Family of Jeong Haechang. Anhyeop Old House, a.k.a. Huihyeondang House has been one of the most prestigious historic residences in Yeongnam area since it was built by the 23rd generation descendant Jeong Uicheol (1791-1871, pen name Dojeongong). The term ‘Pangak’ refers to a repository of wooden printing blocks in the family.
The calligraphy letters are written by Kang Byeokwon (1859-1941, pen name Sou) in the semi-cursive style. The brushwork employs heavy strokes at the beginning and proceeds with variance in its pressure and speed so that the script is filled with lively energy. And yet, the upright posture of ‘板’ and heavy look of ‘閣’ add stability to the script. The plaque bears Kang Byeokwon’s authentic seal ‘姜璧元印’ on the left bottom.
