Banghwajeong (Pavilion with Flower View)Banghwajeong is the hanging wooden plaque of the eastern room in Nakdong Jeongsa Study Hall in Hwawon-eup, Dalseong-gun. Nakdong Jeongsa Study Hall was built by local Confucian scholars to provide a place of learning and lecturing for Seo Changyu (1825-1905, pen name Imjae) in 1901 (38th year of King Gojong). The name ‘Banghwa’ came from the room’s northern view of Sanghwadae Terrace, where Kyeongdeok, the 35th King of Shilla (r. 742-765) paid a visit to see flowers long time ago.The calligraphy of the plaque is Park Hunji’s square script. Most noticeable is the character ‘花’ in the middle, which is written in a flowing continuity from top dots and short horizontal strokes to the thick throw and the vigorous right-falling slant with a hook in the end. ‘亭’ reveals forceful turning and rotating of the brush, through which the soft dot on top turns into solid strokes.
