Angjijae (Hall of Looking Up)
Angjijae is the hanging wooden plaque hung at the eastern house in Gosan Seowon Academy in Gwang-eum-ri, Namhu-myeon, Andong. This plaque, measuring 117cm by 52cm, was donated by the Head Family Residence of Daesan, Yi clan from Hansan. The term ‘Angji’ was derived from a passage in “Minor odes of the kingdom” of the Book of Poetry, which runs, “The high hill is looked up to; The great road is to be travelled on. [高山仰止 景行行止]” It is also related to Confucius’ remarks in “the Record on Example” of the Classic of Rites, that runs, “The Master said, ‘So did the poets love (the exhibition) of humanity. They teach us how one should pursue the path of it, not giving over in the way, forgetting his age, taking no thought that the years before him will not be sufficient, urging on his course with earnestness from day to day, and only giving up when he sinks in death.’ [詩之好仁也如此 鄕道而行 中道而廢 忘身之老也 不知年數之不足 俛焉日有孶孶 斃而後已]”
The calligraphy letters are written in the square style by an unknown hand. The rhythmical brushwork adds an interesting layer to ‘止’ so that it is infused with a sense of anticipation. The spatial composition of the script is well balanced as sparsely organized ‘仰’ and ‘止’ leave enough space for more densely knit ‘齋’.
