Dogye Seowon is the hanging wooden plaque of the namesake academy in Dochon-ri, Bonghwa-eup, Bonghwa-gun. The academy was established to commemorate the faithful mind and virtuous deeds of Yi Suhyeong (1435-1528, pen name Dochon) in 1610 (2nd year of King Gwanghaegun) and later the mortuary tablets of three venerable men were additionally enshrined along with Yi Suhyeong’s. Those three men were Prince of Geumseong Yi Yu (1426-14570), Lord Chungjang Yi Boheum (?-1457), and Yi Yeobin (1556-1631, pen name Chuisa). The academy had served mainly to hold ancestral rituals and provide local education until it was pulled down except for Gonggeuknu Hall upon the decree of Heungseon Daewongun ordering the demolition of seowons and shrines in 1868 (5th year of King Gojong). It was restored in 2005 thanks to the efforts of Family of Yi clan from Ugye.The calligraphy letters are written by an unknown hand in the square style. The script is rendered calm and neat by the steady brushwork, which still brings interesting variance in the direction the brush jumps at the end of each dot in ‘道溪’.
