Chuibyeonjae (House to Accumulate and Discriminate)
Chuibyeonjae is the hanging wooden plaque of the western house in Buksan Jeongsa Study Hall, which was founded to educate students by Yi Hu (1870-1934, pen name Nangsan) in 1930 in Aeryeon-ri, Cheongtong-myeon, Yeongcheon. The term ‘Chuibyeon’ was derived from a passage in “Qian” of the Book of Changes, that runs, “The superior man learns and accumulates (Chui) the results of his learning; puts questions, and discriminates (Byeon) among those results; dwells magnanimously and unambitiously in what he has attained to; and carries it into practice with benevolence. [君子 學以聚之 問以辨之 寬以居之 仁以行之]” The calligraphy letters are written in the semi-cursive style by an unknown hand. The brushwork is a bit unpolished and yet each character maintains certain coherence in its composition, as shown in the dense organization of ‘聚’, the precise orderliness of ‘辨’ and the relaxed posture of ‘齋’.
